URUMA — The Okinawa prefectural UNESCO association held a fiscal 2019 “UNESCO children’s gathering” at the Okinawa Prefecture Ishikawa Youth Center in the Ishikawa district of Uruma City. A total of 25 Okinawan fourth through sixth graders and American students in the same age group from U.S. military bases took part in the activities. The students cooked curry rice together outdoors, assisted by 18 high school student volunteers, including Girl Scouts.
At the event, a 12th grader from Shuri Higashi High School gave a presentation in English about the UNESCO association’s World Terakoya Movement and activities to protect UNESCO World Heritage sites. She later commented that she was “surprised that native speakers use different English expressions” from her.
