All networks gave top play to reports that 47 additional people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tokyo on Thursday, another daily high, saying that the routes of infection remain unknown in half of the cases. NTV took up an emergency meeting between Prime Minister Abe and Tokyo Governor Koike held last night, during which she submitted a request to the GOJ for financial and other assistance. TBS aired a one-on-one interview with Governor Koike, who said Tokyo is on the verge of an “overshoot,” or an explosion of infections, as the number of cases for which the routes of infection are unknown is increasing. She added that the stay-at-home request may continue beyond the weekend depending on the number of new cases.

All national dailies other than Yomiuri gave top play to the requests by Tokyo and neighboring prefectures for their residents to avoid nonessential outings to prevent the new coronavirus from spreading rapidly in the metropolitan area. Yomiuri led with the establishment of a GOJ coronavirus taskforce headquarters.
