Ryukyu Shimpo wrote on Sunday that during a news conference on Friday, Defense Minister Kono commented on the recommendations put together by Bankoku Shinryo Kaigi, a panel of experts advising Okinawa Governor Tamaki on U.S. base issues in Okinawa. The panel reportedly recommended that the U.S. Marines in Okinawa be dispersed outside the prefecture or Japan. Kono is reported to have said that Japan and the United States have undertaken a broad discussion of the issue of Futenma relocation and concluded that the danger at Futenma should be removed as early as possible. The defense minister reportedly added that the GOJ will move forward with the existing relocation plan while providing the local community with sufficient information.
