NHK reported online on press remarks this morning by State Minister for Economic and Fiscal Policy Nishimura, who is responsible for GOJ legislation on the coronavirus outbreak. He disclosed that he and the nation’s leading infectious disease experts agreed last night that the current situation does not warrant declaring a state of emergency. The cabinet minister categorically dismissed media allegations that he leaked to reporters Prime Minister Abe’s alleged intention to declare a state of emergency in the near future. Nishimura also explained that even if a state of emergency is declared, a lockdown, as seen in Europe and the United States, will not occur in Japan because the mandatory measures that government authorities are allowed to take under Japanese law are rather limited.
