Most networks gave top coverage to reports that the number of additional COVID-19 cases in Japan topped 500 on Wednesday, including a record high of 144 cases in Tokyo. The networks showed Tokyo Governor Koike telling the press that out of the 144 people found to be infected yesterday, 81 are under 50 years of age. Fuji TV led with a report that a Japanese female comedian tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday.

All national dailies led with stories related to the coronavirus outbreak, including an ongoing rift between the central and Tokyo metropolitan governments over the types of industries to be suspended under the state of emergency, a call by the National Governors’ Association for the GOJ to compensate for losses to be sustained by retail operators as a result of a non-binding request for business closures, and a considerable reduction in people’s movements in central Tokyo and other urban areas across the nation.
