The Joint Staff Office of the Ministry of Defense announced on April 11 that they had recorded passage of six Chinese military vessels through the waters between the main island of Okinawa and Miyako Island. They were Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier Liaoning and five other vessels that belong to the Chinese Navy. The Liaoning has crossed the same waters four times since June 2019. The ministry is currently gathering intelligence, though no dangerous acts or intrusions into Japan’s territorial waters were committed during the incident.

According to the ministry, at around 7:00 p.m. on April 10, a vessel operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force spotted the Liaoning, along with two Luyang-III class destroyers, two Jiangkai-II class frigates, and a Fuyu-class fast combat support ship, all travelling southeast in the waters about 420 km southwest of the Danjo Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. Later, the Chinese ships headed southward toward the Pacific Ocean, sailing through the waters between the main island of Okinawa and Miyako Island.
