It was revealed on April 13 that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) had secured 2,000 hospital beds in Tokyo by April 12 for new coronavirus patients. TMG aims to further increase the number of beds to 4,000. These beds are intended primarily for patients with moderate symptoms and severe symptoms who may need treatment in intensive care units. The number of coronavirus cases in Tokyo is increasing and the TMG is being pressed to increase the number of beds.

As of April 12, Tokyo’s coronavirus cases totaled about 2,000, 37 of which have been serious. Although some patients who have mild or no symptoms have been transferred to private-sector hospitals, the number of hospital beds continues to be a pressing issue.

In addition to securing beds, TMG will move forward with transporting patients who have mild symptoms to private-sector hotels. One thousand rooms have already been secured for such patients, while hospital beds in medical facilities will be reserved for the treatment patients with moderate or severe symptoms.
