Asahi reported that Prime Minister Abe’s call for increasing the daily PCR diagnostic testing capacity from the present 12,000 to 20,000 may be difficult to achieve because the number of labs is limited. Many laboratories and research institutions also reportedly do not have enough technicians who are used to dealing with emerging pathogens, such as COVID-19. Less than 10% of the registered lab assistants are reportedly capable of conducting PCR testing. The daily added that testing equipment at many labs is outdated.
