All national dailies reported on Prime Minister Abe’s announcement on Monday that his cabinet members will not receive the one-time, 100,000-yen cash handout for economic relief and that all LDP Diet members will probably also choose to decline receipt of the money. The dailies said distribution of the cash handouts will begin in May.
Meanwhile, Sankei projected that out of the 12. 8 trillion yen ($119 billion) to be disbursed in the cash handout program, only 3 trillion yen ($28 billion) is expected to fuel consumption because the restrictions on outings are likely to be kept in place for the foreseeable future. As the bulk of the allowances will likely go toward people’s savings, the paper wrote, the program is unlikely to boost the Japanese economy anytime soon.
