Asahi reported that a team of GOJ and Okinawa officials visited MCAS Futenma on Tuesday to conduct a second onsite investigation into the recent leakage of foam extinguisher containing toxic PFOS into a local river. According to the Foreign Ministry, the U.S. side promised that the results of a U.S. military probe into the mishap will be shared with the Japanese side. While the U.S. side reportedly collected some 24 liters of water samples at three locations inside the installation, it has rejected Japan’s request to collect soil samples to check for possible contamination.
