Mainichi published a prominent report on a PCR testing lab in Tokyo where the lab technicians are inundated with tissue samples. The lab director said the lab’s testing capacity has already reached its limit. The daily wrote in a separate piece that while the GOJ is aiming to increase the nationwide PCR testing capacity to up to 20,000 per day, the present figure is only about 15,000. A total of 8,777 tests were conducted on April 15. One commercial lab official said expanding testing capacity would be difficult because of the limited availability of technicians and necessary equipment.
