FUKUSHIMA — Fukushima Prefecture exported 305 tons of agricultural products in fiscal 2019, setting a new high for the third straight year. The record figure was driven by an increase in exports to such Southeast Asian nations as Thailand and Malaysia, where the Fukushima Prefectural Government held food sampling events to promote sales.
By item, rice represented the largest export at 171 tons, up 13% from fiscal 2018. That was followed by peaches, whose export volume rose by 67% to 54 tons. Exports of apples, which particularly grew for Thailand, stood at 36 tons, roughly a seven-fold increase from fiscal 2018. Some 35 tons of pears were exported. Rice, apple, and pear exports each were a record high. (Abridged)
