Saturday’s Asahi ran an interview with Chairman Yokokura of the Japan Medical Association. He reportedly said that it might not be possible to hold the Tokyo Olympics next summer unless a vaccine for COVID-19 is developed by then. While saying that Prime Minister Abe’s initial declaration of a state of emergency on April 7 has been effective in avoiding an explosive spread of infection, he said the declaration should have been made much earlier. Yokokura stressed the importance of aggressive PCR testing to identify and isolate asymptomatic patients quickly.
