Asahi carried a prominent inside-page article on the recent spillage of a large amount of foam extinguisher containing PFOS at MCAS Futenma, saying that the base authorities allowed Japanese access to the site at what the daily called an “unusually high speed.” While permitting the Japanese side to collect water in the vicinity, the Futenma authorities turned down a separate request to take soil samples to check for possible contamination. The daily explained that the bulk of the foam extinguisher that leaked out of the installation was retrieved by local firefighters, adding that the U.S. military reportedly did nothing to retrieve the foam outside its premises.
