Komeito halves number of candidates in Okinawa election due to virus

At a meeting of its Central Secretariat on April 30, Komeito decided to withdraw its endorsement of two of its four candidates in the June 7 Okinawa prefectural assembly election, for which official campaigning will start on May 29. The party withdrew its endorsement of an incumbent in the Urasoe municipal district and a first-timer running in the southern remote islands district of Naha City. The party made this unusual move following its judgement that the new coronavirus outbreak would prevent the candidates from fully engaging in campaign activities. (Abridged)
