On the night of May 4, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a 20-minute teleconference with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc about the spread of the new coronavirus. Abe conveyed his gratitude for the 50,000 medical masks Vietnam sent Japan in April, and he asked for cooperation in ensuring the stable import of Vietnamese masks and the safety of Japanese nationals living in Vietnam. Prime Minister Phuc expressed a willingness to meet these requests, saying, “We’d like to strengthen cooperation with Japan because it is our strategic partner in a wide range of areas.”
