Polling methodology: The survey was conducted by the Mainichi Shimbun and the Social Survey Research Center on May 6 from 5:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. of those 18 years old or older. A computer-aided random digit sampling (RDS) method was used to generate phone numbers (both landlines and cell phones) randomly by computer, and interactive voice technology was used to call those numbers. For mobile phones, people were asked for cooperation in the survey through audio guidance, and those who agreed were sent a short message service (SMS) text message providing a link to an online answer form. The target number of valid responses was set at 500 each for landlines and mobile phones. Valid responses were received from 575 landline numbers and 575 mobile phone numbers.
