On May 11, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) announced that the capital’s public health centers failed to report 111 coronavirus cases and that 35 cases were reported more than once. The TMG said it plans to raise the capital’s total number of coronavirus cases by 76, the difference between the two figures.

The TMG says it discovered the errors while tidying up the data it has received from the public health centers. The error is thought to have been caused by three factors: (1) there was no system for inputting information on coronavirus patients’ hospital admittances and discharges; (2) the public health centers have been overburdened by the increase in consultations from residents with the rapid spread of the coronavirus; and (3) there were hindrances in reporting to the TMG.
