A credit research firm has found that the coronavirus pandemic has caused 142 businesses in Japan to fail.

Teikoku Databank says 87 companies nationwide had gone bankrupt as of Wednesday.

Fifty-five others have halted business and begun procedures to file for bankruptcy.

Of the total, 53 are hotels or Japanese-style inns and 41 are pubs, restaurants, clothing stores or other retailers. There were also 20 wholesalers and 14 manufacturers.

The research firm says many of the businesses that have failed were already struggling, but some restaurants and service providers that are currently closed may never reopen.
