An independent Upper House member and a member of the opposition parliamentary group, Mitsuru Sakurai (Miyagi district) met with Masakazu Sekiguchi, Chairman of the Lower House General Assembly of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on May 15 to submit his application for membership in the LDP parliamentary group. The LDP is expected to accept the application.

Sakurai left the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) last November but remained with the opposition parliamentary group formed by the DPFP, Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP), and others. He applied to join the LDP group after submitting a letter of withdrawal to the opposition group on the same day.

He plans to remain independent after joining the LDP group. As for the reason for the change, he explained to the press, “I cannot work on policies, including coronavirus measures, unless I join the ruling party group.”
