The Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare (MHLW) has announced that the number of beds set aside for COVID-19 patients nationwide has increased to more than 17,600, while the number of hospitalized patients has decreased to about 2,000. In each prefecture, COVID-19 patients number less than 40% of the number of beds. The MHLW concludes, “The medical system is not strained at present because the number of patients is declining. The situation will be fine if things continue as they are now, but there is a chance of resurgence. We would like to see the prefectures consider the number of beds necessary and aim to secure more beds if that number becomes insufficient.” (Abridged)
