The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) will create a system that allows the government to check companies’ inventories of emergency supplies to prevent those goods from running out during pandemics and natural disasters. During the COVID-19 outbreak, it took time for the government to grasp how many face masks and other supplies were in stock when they were in short supply. By analyzing inventory and demand, the government will be able to ask companies to increase output and deliver goods to places that are running short in a timely fashion.
The government will soon start a pilot study and establish the system within fiscal 2020. (Abridged)
