NHK reported this morning that DOS spokesperson Ortagus released a comment on Monday with regard to Japan not joining the U.S., UK, and two other nations in issuing a joint statement expressing concerns about China’s move to impose a national security law on Hong Kong. She reportedly said: “Although Japan did not participate in the joint statement, it has spoken strongly about China’s national security law….Japan and the United States are allies, democratic partners, and share strong concerns about the situation in Hong Kong.” According to the network, she also expressed hope to continue to work closely with Japan on the matter by saying: “We welcome Japan’s strong calls for democratic values and the maintenance of a free and open system in Hong Kong.”
