Nikkei and Yomiuri reported online that East Japan Railway plans to update in mid-July an existing app providing up-to-date information on congestion on trains, saying that rail customers will be able to receive information on degree of crowding on the Chuo, Keiyo and 20 other lines. By inputting in their smartphone the train that they are planning to ride, users will be alerted in almost real-time to the status of congestion  – from “seats are available” to “very crowded.” Such information is already available for Yamanote line users.
