TOKYO – Highlights of Japan-related events for June 15-21:

 

June 15 (Mon)

— Bank of Japan to hold two-day meeting of decision-making Policy Board.

The central bank is widely expected to maintain its ultraeasy monetary policy to support the country’s coronavirus-hit economy.

 

June 16 (Tues)

— Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda to hold press conference.

— Renown Inc. to be delisted from First Section of Tokyo Stock Exchange after the apparel maker filed for bankruptcy protection due to falling sales amid the coronavirus pandemic.

— The Hiroshima District Court will hand down its decision on prosecutors’ request for an 18-month prison term for a secretary of ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmaker Anri Kawai in connection with bribery of her election campaigners last year.

 

June 17 (Wed)

— Parliament to end ordinary session.

The budget for fiscal 2020, and the first and second supplementary budgets to finance measures to mitigate the fallout from the novel coronavirus pandemic have been enacted by parliament.

— Finance Ministry to release customs-cleared trade statistics for May.

— Japan Tourism Agency to release data on number of foreigners visiting Japan in May.

Japan only received an estimated 2,900 foreign travelers in April, down 99.9 percent from a year earlier, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

 

June 18 (Thurs)

— Official campaigning to start for the Tokyo gubernatorial election.

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike announced Friday that she will seek a second four-year term in the gubernatorial election on July 5, aiming to stay at the helm of the capital’s response to the novel coronavirus and preparations for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which have been postponed to next summer.

 

June 19 (Fri)

— Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to release nationwide consumer price index for May.

— Bank of Japan to release minutes of April 27 Policy Board meeting.

— Bank of Japan to release minutes of May 22 Policy Board meeting.

— Professional baseball season to begin after being delayed due to coronavirus pandemic.
