Saturday’s Ryukyu Shimpo wrote that in relation to the announcement on Thursday by the Ministry of Environment that PFOS and PFOA above a tentative GOJ benchmark of 50 nanograms per liter were detected in 13 prefectures, Environment Minister Koizumi told reporters on Friday that his ministry will coordinate with other relevant government agencies so that officials at the Okinawa prefectural government will be allowed to conduct onsite surveys at U.S. military bases. The paper wrote that the ministry surveyed rivers and groundwater at 171 locations near facilities nationwide suspected of discharging chemicals in fiscal 2019 and that the chemicals were detected at levels above the GOJ benchmark in spring water at three locations in Ginowan. Saturday’s Okinawa Times ran a similar report.
