Secretary Pompeo holds talks with China’s foreign policy chief

Mainichi wrote that Secretary of State Pompeo held talks with China’s foreign policy chief Yang Jiechi in Hawaii on Wednesday, speculating that the meeting was intended to seek ways to ease bilateral tensions over China’s handling of the new coronavirus outbreak and introduction of a national security law for Hong Kong. According to the Department of State, the Secretary stressed the need for mutually beneficial economic and security policies, while calling for full transparency and information sharing with regard to the response to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Yang asked the United States to respect China’s sovereignty and not interfere in its internal affairs, including those involving Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Xinjiang. Sankei ran a similar report.
