Nikkei took up press remarks made this morning by Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga, who commented on Prime Minister Abe’s intention announced yesterday to hold thorough discussions at the National Security Council on a security strategy to enhance Japan’s deterrence following the decision to halt the procurement of Aegis Ashore batteries. The government spokesman noted that it is uncertain whether such deliberations will lead to a review of the National Security Strategy adopted in December 2013. He was quoted as saying: “It is premature to project when the NSC will produce a conclusion” of such discussions.

Meanwhile, Defense Minister Kono indicated to the press today that as a result of the planned NSC discussions, the existing National Defense Program Guidelines and/or the Medium Term Defense Program might be updated. He added that the GOJ and the USG share the view that the suspension of the Aegis Ashore program will be “beneficial to Japan.”
