TBS reported at noon on the finding that Russia has informed the Japanese government of its plan to conduct a geological survey in the Sea of Okhotsk, which includes Japan’s EEZ around the Northern Territories. The network said that according to MOFA, last week the Russian side gave notice that it would conduct a survey in the Sea of Okhotsk for three months from June 18 to September 8. The network said it is believed that the waters contain petroleum and other seabed resources, adding that Russia is expected to study the amount of resources and may also be conducting the survey for the purpose of operating its naval forces in the area. Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga reportedly told the press that the Japanese government has lodged a protest with Russia, saying: “This runs counter to Japan’s position on the Northern Territories and we have conveyed the message that it is unacceptable.”
