All national dailies reported that the ruling LDP convened a meeting yesterday to look into missile defense platforms to replace the defunct Aegis Ashore project, projecting that it may put together by the end of the month a set of recommendations including having the SDF possess missiles to strike enemy bases. Mainichi and Sankei underscored that Japan needs to clear the technical and budgetary hurdles for allowing the SDF to possess enemy strike capabilities, explaining that the SDF would also have to improve its capabilities for gathering intelligence on enemy bases by procuring more reconnaissance aircraft and/or satellites, which would be extremely costly.
