Asahi ran a one-on-one video interview with former National Security Adviser John Bolton on Tuesday, during which he explained his claim in his recently published memoir that President Trump wanted Japan to pay $8 billion for hosting U.S. troops. Bolton wrote in the book that he told then-Secretary General of the National Security Secretariat Yachi in July 2019 the reason for the President’s request for Japan to pay $8 billion annually rather than the current $2.5 billion. Bolton reportedly told the paper that the request was based on the President’s “business deal” approach and that foreign policy should be based on relationships of trust between allies rather than business deals.
