On July 10, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held a meeting of the study group on missile defense (headed by former Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera). The group interviewed former Secretary General of the National Security Secretariat Shotaro Yachi and Keio Univ. Professor Ken Jimbo on missile defense systems that could serve as an alternative to the Aegis Ashore land-based missile defense system.

According to a meeting participant, Yachi and Jimbo insisted on the need for Japan to possess capabilities to attack enemy bases, saying such statements as “From the perspective of raising defense capabilities, [Japan] needs to possess a certain level of strike capabilities” and “[If Japan possesses the ability to strike enemy bases] it would enhance Japan’s deterrence capability and make it difficult for North Korea to fire ballistic missiles.”

The group will compile a proposal later this month based on the interviews.
