Suga comments on U.S. announcement that Russia conducted anti-satellite test

NHK reported that in relation to the accusation by the U.S. Space Force that Russia conducted an anti-satellite test on July 15, Chief Cabinet Secretary Suga said that ensuring safety in outer space is an important security issue and that Japan will closely monitor the moves of each nation. Suga reportedly said: “We are aware of the announcement by the United States. We are also collecting and analyzing information. Ensuring the safe use of outer space is an important security issue for nations promoting the use of outer space.” When asked by a group of reporters whether Japan will also need to possess weapons for destroying satellites, Suga reportedly said: “As for the specific equipment that the SDF needs to possess in the future in outer space, we need to conduct a comprehensive analysis covering international affairs and the level of the military technology of the time. I will refrain from making specific comments at this point.”
