Tokyo, Aug. 6 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government is expected to agree soon with AstraZeneca PLC to receive over 100 million doses of a novel coronavirus vaccine being developed by the British pharmaceutical giant, government sources said Thursday.

The vaccine is under development with the University of Oxford, with ongoing clinical trials showing its effectiveness against the virus. The use of the vaccine is expected to start this autumn at the earliest.

The Japanese government has already reached a basic agreement to receive a coronavirus vaccine for 60 million people from major U.S. drugmaker Pfizer Inc.

It is in negotiations with other drugmakers to secure more vaccines against the novel coronavirus.
