Saturday’s Sankei argued that the Five Eyes alliance made up of the United States, the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand is tightening its net against China. While alleging that there are moves to support Japan’s participation in the coalition to respond to the threat posed by China, the paper speculated that Japan would be required to enhance its capability to collect and analyze intelligence and enact an anti-espionage law in order to contribute to the alliance as a “sixth eye.” The paper wrote that according to Reuters, in 2018 the Five Eyes began sharing with Germany and Japan confidential information about China’s overseas operations, and Chairman Tugendhat of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the British Parliament sounded out Defense Minister Kono on the idea of Japan joining the alliance when they spoke by phone in July.
