NHK reported that in response to the arrest of Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, National Security Advisor O’Brien released a statement on Monday saying: “We are deeply troubled by the arrest of Jimmy Lai….These arrests…are the latest violations of Beijing’s commitments to the Hong Kong people and the world… These arrests are also a clear effort to intimidate pro-democracy and political opposition figures and suppress Hong Kong’s free and independent media…. We stand with Jimmy Lai and his sons and colleagues, and call on Beijing to repeal the national security law and restore Hong Kong’s rule of law immediately.”

The network said Secretary of State Pompeo strongly criticized the arrest of Jimmy Lai on Twitter, saying: “Further proof that the CCP has eviscerated Hong Kong’s freedoms and eroded the rights of its people.” The network said White House Spokesperson McEnany also criticized China for slapping sanctions on U.S. lawmakers, adding that the Trump administration is increasing its pressure on China.
