Yomiuri wrote that the GOJ has decided to participate in an international framework for the joint procurement of coronavirus vaccines with the expectation that Japan will be able to secure vaccines for as many as 25 million people if pharmaceutical companies participating in the framework succeed in developing vaccines. The paper wrote that Gavi, a global alliance for vaccines and immunization, and the WHO are taking the lead in developing the institutional design for the framework and that the participating countries are expected to commit money to forge contracts with drug makers to secure vaccines for up to 20% of their populations. Some 75 nations, including Japan, the UK, Canada, and Norway, have expressed their intention to join the initiative. The paper wrote that Japan has decided to participate in the framework based on the view that its agreements with AstraZeneca and Pfizer will not yield sufficient vaccines.
