Washington, D.C. — According to the AP and other media outlets, former U.S. Ambassador to Japan William Hagerty (60) won the Republican primary in Tennessee on Aug. 6, thus becoming the party’s nominee in the upcoming Senate election. The Senate election will be held on Nov. 3 at the same time as the presidential election.

Hagerty joined the Trump campaign in the 2016 presidential election and played a key role in the transition team. He was ambassador to Japan from August 2017 to July 2019, when he resigned from the position to run for Senate to succeed the incumbent Republican senator from Tennessee.

Some 15 candidates competed for the party nomination in the Tennessee primary. According to the AP, every Tennessee senator has been a Republican since 1994.
