Asahi reported that a large number of Japanese tweets were posted in protest of the arrest late Monday of prominent Hong Kong democracy activist Agnes Chow, saying that a tweet by her fellow activist Nathan Law calling for “the support of everyone in Japan” was retweeted more than 60,000 times. Law also posted a tweet with the hashtag #FreeAgnes that went viral, with more than 290,000 people, including Japanese Diet members, retweeting it. According to the article, many Japanese Twitter users expressed relief in response to Chow’s release from jail about a day later. Renowned writer Hirotada Ototake tweeted: “I was frightened by the cruelty and the foolishness of the Hong Kong National Security Law.”
