On Aug. 7, the “liaison council for consultations on Kadena Air Base (Sanrenkyo),” which is comprised of Okinawa City and Kadena and Chatan Towns, mailed a letter of protest to several organizations regarding a TFOA (things falling off aircraft) incident in which a part fell from a Kadena-based F-15 aircraft. Sanrenkyo’s requests include the investigation of the cause of the incident and disclosure of the results, suspension of operations of the same model of aircraft, and prevention of recurrence.

Sanrenkyo pointed out that the incident “could have caused a serious tragedy involving local residents” and “cannot be overlooked.” The group claimed that flight of the same model of aircraft on the day after the incident is not acceptable because it causes “great anxiety” among local residents. The letter was sent to the 18th Wing at Kadena, the Okinawa Defense Bureau, the Okinawa Liaison Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Okinawa, and the U.S. Consulate General Naha.
