The Kyushu Defense Bureau of the Ministry of Defense (MOD) began constructing on Sept. 1 facilities to accommodate the U.S. military in the event of emergency at the Air Self-Defense Force’s Nyutabaru Air Base in Shintomi Town, Miyazaki Prefecture. The project is based on the 2006 Japan-U.S. Roadmap for Realignment Implementation.

According to the defense bureau, the facilities are designed to accommodate 12 U.S. military fighter jets and a transport plane as well as some 200 American service members in such emergency situations as armed attacks on Japan. The bureau aims to complete the construction of major facilities, including an apron, a fuel tank, and an ammunition depot within fiscal 2021, and an office building within fiscal 2022.

The defense bureau briefed residents near the base on the outline of the construction in July and had intended to launch the construction by the end of the month. But the start of construction was delayed due to the spread of the new coronavirus. Some residents are calling on the bureau to hold another briefing, but this has not been possible due to COVID-19. The bureau said, “We’re looking into the timing of a briefing by consulting with Shintomi Town.”
