With regard to the new direction for Japan’s security strategy currently under consideration by the government, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said during a press conference on Sept. 2: “I will refrain from commenting on a possible date for making a final decision.” Suga added, “It is important that the government continue to hold in-depth discussions on the issue.”

At a press conference in June, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that he “would like to thoroughly discuss the matter at the National Security Council (NSC) this summer to determine the new direction of our strategy and put it into effect without delay.”
