Tokyo, Sept. 7 (Jiji Press)–Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga on Monday criticized the Defense Ministry for its failure to report safety problems with the Aegis Ashore land-based missile defense system immediately.

“I hope the ministry will take this matter seriously,” Suga told a press conference.

Suga stressed that the government will improve the ministry’s way of conducting work under the defense minister, considering it “an issue for the ministry as a whole.”

On Friday, a ministry report said that it took months for the ministry to report the problems with the interceptor boosters in the Aegis Ashore system to Defense Minister Taro Kono. The problems led Kono to abandon the Aegis Ashore deployment plan.

Suga said that Kono gave warnings to officials concerned Friday.
