A book by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga published in 2012 has surged in price since the LDP presidential candidate emerged as a frontrunner in the race to succeed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The original cover price was ¥1,300, but the book, titled “Seijika no Kakugo Kanryou o Ugokase (Politicians’ preparedness to make bureaucrats act), was being offered on some online sites for about ¥100,000 on Sept. 7.
Published when the LDP was in opposition, the book introduces policies that Suga promoted when he was internal affairs and communications minister and discusses how politicians should take the initiative in utilizing bureaucrats.
“I wasn’t aware that the price of the book had risen that high,” Suga said at a press conference on Monday.
“I started my political career at a point when I had no family or local ties. I hope as many people as possible understand that.”
