Tokyo, Sept. 9 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s customs authorities seized 585 kilograms of illegal drugs in the first half of 2020, down 63 pct from a year before, the Finance Ministry said Wednesday.

The decline reflected a slump in the number of air passengers due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The number of illegal drug smuggling cases in January-June dropped 41 pct to 339.

Meanwhile, the amount of confiscated so-called gateway drugs, such as cocaine and synthetic drug MDMA, increased.

“It’s possible that such drugs are spreading across the country,” an official of the ministry’s Customs and Tariff Bureau said, noting a need to intensify crackdowns on illegal drugs.
