The Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan (FCCJ), a hub for foreign journalists working in Japan that has hosted many noteworthy press conferences, considered dissolving last year due to worsening financial conditions, sources told the Tokyo Shimbun. The number of correspondents in the club dropped by half from its peak so the club was unable to collect sufficient membership fees, which make up the bulk of its revenue. The club’s latest financial statement also showed deficits that exceeded its cash and deposits, making the survival of the club uncertain. (Abridged)
