On Sept. 10, the Okinawa Defense Bureau disclosed the monthly records of the flight paths of U.S. military aircraft that used Futenma Airfield in 2019. Some flights diverged from the predetermined airfield traffic pattern agreed upon by Japan and the U.S.

In response to an inquiry made on the same day by the Ryukyu Shimpo, the bureau explained: “It is understood that sometimes aircraft must choose a path outside of the traffic pattern due to weather conditions such as thick clouds and strong winds. In general, their flight paths were consistent with the predetermined routes.” (Abridged)
