On Sept. 9, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso discussed the major drubbing that [the Liberal Democratic Party] experienced in the 2009 general election under his leadership during a lecture to students from N High School, a correspondence curriculum school. He explained that the government “missed the opportunity to dissolve the Diet” as it was preoccupied with dealing with the financial crisis triggered by the collapse of Lehman Brothers. “It was the hardest time,” he said.

He was answering a question from one of the students.

Regarding the two consumption tax hikes that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe carried out, he noted that “he did what he had to do.”
