Liberal Democratic Party Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai indicated a cautious stance toward the early dissolution of the Diet for a snap election when he spoke to reporters at the party headquarters on Sept. 8. “There are no issues for which we need to seek a public mandate at the moment. We don’t have to rush,” he said.

He noted that dissolving the Diet is the sole prerogative of the prime minister and added that “at present the party is not in a situation to ask for a snap election.” With regards to appointments to the new cabinet and party leadership, which Prime Minister Abe’s successor will handle, he noted that “this will be the most important task for the new prime minister and I’ll help him if asked.
