Japan govt appoints Tarumi as new ambassador to China

Tokyo, Sept. 11 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government on Friday appointed Hideo Tarumi, former chief at the foreign minister’s Secretariat, as new ambassador to China.


Tarumi, 59, joined the Foreign Ministry in 1985 and served in such posts as director-general of the ministry’s Consular Affairs Bureau.


The government also named Hidenao Yanagi, 61, ambassador to Jordan, as ambassador to Germany, and Kazuhiro Suzuki, 59, former director-general of the ministry’s North American Affairs Bureau, as ambassador to Turkey.


Ambassador to Jamaica Masaya Fujiwara was named to double as ambassador to Belize, and Shuji Noguchi, ambassador to Gabon, and Sao Tome and Principe, was appointed to concurrently serve as ambassador to Equatorial Guinea.


Following are other diplomatic appointments decided on Friday, with the newly appointed officials’ key previous or current positions in parentheses:

   Hironori Sawada, 63, ambassador to North Macedonia (ambassador to Angola)
   Akio Miyajima, 62, ambassador to Poland (ambassador to Turkey)
   Takahiko Katsumata, 60, ambassador to Servia (ambassador to Turkmenistan)
   Kaoru Shimazaki, 62, ambassador to Jordan (ambassador to the Czech Republic)
   Hidemoto Fukuzawa, 65, ambassador to Uganda (chief of the Cairo and Maputo offices of Sumitomo Corp.)
   Jiro Maruhashi, 63, ambassador to Angola (consul-general in Recife, Brazil)
   Kensaku Munenaga, 63, ambassador to Tonga (chief of Yokohama Customs)
   Hiromichi Matsushima, 62, ambassador to Slovenia (vice agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister for international affairs)
   Kazutoshi Aikawa, 60, ambassador to Iran (envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to the United States)
   Umio Otsuka, 60, ambassador to Djibouti (chief of the Defense Ministry’s Defense Intelligence Headquarters)
   Yoshie Nakatani, 60, ambassador to Paraguay (chief of the Foreign Ministry’s Asia-Europe Cooperation Bureau)
   Hiroyuki Yamamoto, 60, ambassador to Turkmenistan (consul-general in Khabarovsk)
   Katsuhide Ariyoshi, 60, ambassador to El Salvador (minister at the Japanese Embassy in Buenos Aires and at the embassy in Wellington)
   Takako Ito, 59, ambassador to Ethiopia (consul-general in Toronto)
   Hideo Suzuki, 57, ambassador to the Czech Republic (director-general of the Foreign Ministry’s International Cooperation Bureau)
   Kotaro Suzuki, 56, ambassador to Iraq (minister at the Japanese Embassy in Abu Dhabi and at the embassy in Cairo)
   Toshihiko Horiuchi, 54, ambassador at Japan’s mission to the African Union (minister at the Japanese Embassy in Paris)
   Fumio Shimizu, 55, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to China (ambassador at Japan’s mission to the African Union)

Note: The series of appointments will take effect on Tuesday or Thursday.
